The Winter Cabin Getaway

In Winterset, when the snow settles, the Iowa cabin getaway comes into its own. It captures something larger: the winter cabin.
"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Talia Sato, a curator who has spent years on it. The landscape does most of the work; you just have to show up and look.
Getting there
Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. The pleasure is in the pace: this is a place that rewards slowing down. The same current runs from Winterset to Pella, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Colette Whitlock, a curator near Pella, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
Where to linger
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Winterset is only getting started.
