The Golf Escapes Hiding in Plain Sight

Something is shifting in Okoboji. Iowa hides some of the Midwest's best public golf in plain sight. At its core: the hidden golf escape.
"It comes down to attention," says Nadia Petersen, a outfitter who has watched the change from the front row. It is the kind of trip that feels longer than it is, in the best way.
Where to linger
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. The pleasure is in the pace: this is a place that rewards slowing down. What is taking shape between Okoboji and Fairfield would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Vera Devereaux, a innkeeper near Fairfield, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
Getting there
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Okoboji is only getting started.
