Heartland Denim, Vintage and New

In Mason City, denim is the heartland's native fabric. A new generation is wearing it — vintage and new — its own way. It captures something larger: denim as heartland heritage.
"People here have always had taste — now they have the outlets," says Odette Hargrove, a buyer. The pieces are made to earn their place, season after season.
Where it comes from
Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. There is a quiet luxury to clothing this considered, and no logos in sight. The same current runs from Mason City to Waterloo, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.
"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Harriet Ellsworth, a stylist working near Waterloo.
The details that matter
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, Mason City has found something worth keeping.
