The Case for Slip Dressing

Something is shifting in the East Village. The slip dress has shed its evening-only reputation. Consider it the most versatile thing you own. At its core: slip dressing, day to night.
"It comes down to attention," says Theo Merton, a boutique owner who has watched the change from the front row. Nothing here shouts. The confidence is in the cut, the cloth and the fit.
The look
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. There is a quiet luxury to clothing this considered, and no logos in sight. What is taking shape between the East Village and Mason City would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Marguerite Ashford, a creative director working near Mason City.
Where it comes from
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, the East Village has found something worth keeping.
