Each May, the Dutch town of Pella erupts into tulips and pastry. Plan around it. You feel it most in Pella — call it, if you like, tulip season in Pella.

"It comes down to attention," says Adele Nakamura, a outfitter who has watched the change from the front row. It is the kind of trip that feels longer than it is, in the best way.

Before you go

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. Locals are generous with directions and even more generous with recommendations. The same current runs from Pella to Des Moines, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Bernadette Whitlock, a curator working near Des Moines.

Getting there

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, Pella has found something worth keeping.
