The Midwest Modern Farmhouse, Refined

In Davenport, stripped of its clichés, the modern farmhouse is becoming genuinely refined. It captures something larger: the farmhouse, reconsidered.

"It comes down to attention," says Margot Merton, a design historian who has watched the change from the front row. There is restraint in every choice, and generosity in the result.

The approach

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. Natural materials do the heavy lifting: oak, wool, plaster, unglazed clay. The same current runs from Davenport to Dubuque, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Cormac Renner, a builder working near Dubuque.

Materials and light

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Davenport is only getting started.
