Designing the Bedroom Sanctuary

Something is shifting in Waterloo. The bedroom is being redesigned as a true sanctuary — layered, tactile and calm. At its core: the bedroom sanctuary.
"It comes down to attention," says Josephine Ellsworth, a design historian who has watched the change from the front row. There is restraint in every choice, and generosity in the result.
The finishing touches
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. The rooms feel calm without feeling empty, warm without any clutter. What is taking shape between Waterloo and Council Bluffs would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Elias Aldrich, a architect near Council Bluffs, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
The approach
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, Waterloo has found something worth keeping.
