The New Midwest Menswear Uniform

A relaxed, well-made menswear uniform is emerging across the Midwest — and it starts in Iowa. You feel it most in Ames — call it, if you like, the new menswear uniform.
"People here have always had taste — now they have the outlets," says Elias Novak, a designer. The palette is restrained — oatmeal, charcoal, bone — and all the better for it.
Where it comes from
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. Nothing here shouts. The confidence is in the cut, the cloth and the fit. What is taking shape between Ames and Cedar Falls would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Delia Bishara, a buyer near Cedar Falls, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
The details that matter
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Ames is only getting started.
