The Linen Summer Uniform

In Waterloo, loose, breathable and unbothered — linen has become the unofficial Iowa summer uniform. It captures something larger: the linen uniform.
"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Priya Calloway, a creative director who has spent years on it. There is a quiet luxury to clothing this considered, and no logos in sight.
The details that matter
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. The palette is restrained — oatmeal, charcoal, bone — and all the better for it. What is taking shape between Waterloo and Ames would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Vera Calloway, a designer near Ames, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
Where it comes from
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Waterloo is only getting started.
