The American Porch, Reimagined

The American porch is being reimagined as a genuine room, not an afterthought. You feel it most in the Amana Colonies — call it, if you like, the porch reimagined.

"People here have always had taste — now they have the outlets," says Beatrix Rios, a builder. The best spaces here look as though they were assembled slowly, over years.

The approach

Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. There is restraint in every choice, and generosity in the result. What is taking shape between the Amana Colonies and West Des Moines would have seemed improbable not long ago.

"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Adele Aldrich, a architect working near West Des Moines.

The finishing touches

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, the Amana Colonies is only getting started.
