Decorah and the Driftless Escape

Tucked in the unglaciated Driftless, Decorah is Iowa's most surprising escape. You feel it most in Decorah — call it, if you like, the Driftless hideaway.

"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Marguerite Sato, a outfitter who has spent years on it. It is the kind of trip that feels longer than it is, in the best way.

What to do

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. The landscape does most of the work; you just have to show up and look. The same current runs from Decorah to Davenport, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Colette Devereaux, a curator near Davenport, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."

Where to linger

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Decorah is only getting started.
