Living with plants through the low winter light is an art. Iowans are mastering it. You feel it most in Cedar Rapids — call it, if you like, gardening the winter interior.

"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Marguerite Marchetti, a interior designer who has spent years on it. Natural materials do the heavy lifting: oak, wool, plaster, unglazed clay.

Materials and light

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. There is restraint in every choice, and generosity in the result. The same current runs from Cedar Rapids to Grinnell, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Nathaniel Bishara, a interior designer working near Grinnell.

Living with it

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Cedar Rapids is only getting started.
