Loft Conversions Reshape Downtown Living

In the Amana Colonies, old warehouses downtown are becoming some of the most desirable homes in the city. It captures something larger: downtown loft living.
"It comes down to attention," says Margot Fontaine, a builder who has watched the change from the front row. The best spaces here look as though they were assembled slowly, over years.
The approach
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. Natural materials do the heavy lifting: oak, wool, plaster, unglazed clay. What is taking shape between the Amana Colonies and Cedar Rapids would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Malcolm Nakamura, a architect working near Cedar Rapids.
Materials and light
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, the Amana Colonies is only getting started.
