A Boutique Crawl Through the East Village

The East Village has become a boutique district worth clearing an afternoon for. You feel it most in the East Village — call it, if you like, the East Village boutique district.
"It comes down to attention," says August Lund, a stylist who has watched the change from the front row. It is a wardrobe built to be worn, layered and lived in through a long Iowa year.
The look
Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. There is a quiet luxury to clothing this considered, and no logos in sight. The same current runs from the East Village to Pella, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.
"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Margot Bishara, a stylist working near Pella.
Where it comes from
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, the East Village is only getting started.
