Something is shifting in Des Moines. With a world-class sculpture park and museum, Des Moines makes a serious art weekend. At its core: the art-filled weekend.

"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Ingrid Calloway, a guide who has spent years on it. Come for the obvious attraction and stay for the quiet corners around it.

What to do

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. The pleasure is in the pace: this is a place that rewards slowing down. The same current runs from Des Moines to Decorah, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Lena Nakamura, a guide near Decorah, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."

Where to linger

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Des Moines is only getting started.
