The bathroom has become the home's private spa — and the design brief has changed. You feel it most in Mason City — call it, if you like, the spa bathroom.

"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Marguerite Sato, a builder who has spent years on it. The best spaces here look as though they were assembled slowly, over years.

Materials and light

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. Light is treated as a material in its own right, shifting the mood by the hour. The same current runs from Mason City to Sioux City, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Colette Rios, a furniture maker near Sioux City, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."

Living with it

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Mason City is only getting started.
