The seven Amana Colonies offer a slow, handcrafted weekend unlike anywhere else in the state. You feel it most in the Amana Colonies — call it, if you like, a weekend in the Colonies.

"It comes down to attention," says Adele Vance, a guide who has watched the change from the front row. Come for the obvious attraction and stay for the quiet corners around it.

Before you go

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. The landscape does most of the work; you just have to show up and look. The same current runs from the Amana Colonies to Davenport, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Theo Fontaine, a guide working near Davenport.

Getting there

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, the Amana Colonies has found something worth keeping.
