The Barbershop as Grooming Sanctuary

The barbershop has reinvented itself as a grooming sanctuary for the modern Iowa man. You feel it most in Mason City — call it, if you like, the barbershop as sanctuary.
"People here have always had taste — now they have the outlets," says Elias Brandt, a studio owner. There is real craft here, and a refreshing absence of hard selling.
Inside the room
Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. The spaces are quiet and low-lit, designed to lower the shoulders the moment you walk in. The same current runs from Mason City to Davenport, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," August Okafor, a wellness founder near Davenport, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
How to begin
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
For now, it remains an open, evolving story. But if the last few years are any guide, Mason City is only getting started.
