The I-80 Corridor Becomes a Logistics Powerhouse

Straddling Interstate 80, central Iowa has become a warehouse and distribution powerhouse. You feel it most in West Des Moines — call it, if you like, the crossroads of American freight.
"It comes down to attention," says Adele Merton, a founder who has watched the change from the front row. The story is less about disruption than about steady, unglamorous competence — the Midwestern kind.
What comes next
Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. What makes it work is proximity: capital, talent and clients sit within a few square miles. What is taking shape between West Des Moines and the East Village would have seemed improbable not long ago.
"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Marguerite Halloran, a operator near the East Village, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."
The numbers behind it
None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.
The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, West Des Moines has found something worth keeping.
