The Herbal Apothecary Comes Back

Something is shifting in Des Moines. Tinctures, salves and dried botanicals are back, dispensed from a new wave of apothecaries. At its core: the modern apothecary counter.

"People here have always had taste — now they have the outlets," says Harriet Crane, a spa director. The appeal is partly aesthetic and partly something harder to name — a permission to slow down.

The ritual

Spend an afternoon with it and the pattern comes into focus. There is real craft here, and a refreshing absence of hard selling. The same current runs from Des Moines to Dubuque, in ways few would have predicted a decade ago.

"People assume nothing interesting happens out here," Freya Lindqvist, a esthetician near Dubuque, told me. "They are wrong — and they are starting to notice."

How to begin

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, Des Moines has found something worth keeping.
