Something is shifting in Des Moines. Principal, Nationwide and a cluster of quiet giants keep Des Moines punching far above its weight in global insurance. At its core: the third-largest insurance hub in the United States.

"We are not trying to imitate the coasts," says Marisol Faulkner, a managing partner who has spent years on it. What makes it work is proximity: capital, talent and clients sit within a few square miles.

The numbers behind it

Look closely and the momentum is unmistakable. Margins here are earned slowly, through relationships that outlast any single quarter. What is taking shape between Des Moines and the Amana Colonies would have seemed improbable not long ago.

"The talent was always here. What changed is that it decided to stay," said Elise Ellsworth, a analyst working near the Amana Colonies.

The people in the room

None of this happened overnight. It is the product of a hundred small decisions — about quality, about place, about the kind of life worth building in Iowa. What began as a niche is becoming, quietly, a defining feature of the state.

The chapter is still being written. On the evidence so far, Des Moines has found something worth keeping.
